A MESSAGE FROM CHANCELLOR GABER

Categories: Chancellor's Messages

Note: This message was updated on Nov. 20, 2025, to include a second option for contacting Police and Public Safety.

Dear Niner Nation,

As you may know, over the weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents conducted activity in the Charlotte area, including University City.  In response to questions from our campus community, I want to reiterate the protocols you should follow if you encounter anyone on campus identifying themselves as a federal law enforcement officer.

The University complies with ALL federal and state laws, including those that protect student and employee privacy and guide how all law enforcement actions must be handled. If someone approaches you stating they are a federal agent:

  • Ask the individual to wait while you follow campus protocol.
  • Call Police and Public Safety at 704-687-8300.
    • If needed, you may also always call 704-687-2200, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • A PPS officer will be dispatched to your location.
  • The responding PPS officer will verify the individual’s credentials.
  • Police and Public Safety will work with the Office of Legal Affairs to review and verify any subpoenas or warrants that may be presented.

Thank you for taking a moment to review these protocols. We will continue to monitor developments and share any necessary updates with our campus community.

Sincerely,

Sharon L. Gaber
Chancellor
