Shaping the Future

UNC Charlotte has a history of responding to the educational and economic needs of its service region, and its evolution continued during the 2023-24 academic year. Here are a few noteworthy examples:

  • The University continued to build and plan for the future through the development of a 10-year comprehensive campus master plan that supports the strategic plan and the University’s vision as a Carnegie R1 university focused on student success.
  • The opening of new spaces designed to foster stronger sense of student community, including Dontá L. Wilson Hall, a 147,000-square-foot residence hall with capacity for nearly 700 students, and the 49th Acre, an outdoor student event venue funded through a $10 million private gift.
  • The introduction of new options in the Popp Martin Student Union including the Market powered by Amazon’s Just Walkaway technology, the first of its kind in the North Carolina higher-ed space, and Social 704, a newly renovated dining hall that won a state design award. Planning also began on a new dedicated ESports space in Norm’s Loft, funded through a $1.5 million allocation from the General Assembly.
  • The $60 million Phase I expansion of Jerry Richardson Stadium, approved by the Board of Governors, will feature the construction of a tower and the augmentation of stadium capacity, which underscores Charlotte’s dedication to providing a top-tier athletic environment for students, alumni and the broader community. The club level will serve as a dedicated team dining area, meeting facility and conference space, enabling year-round use.·

Renovations to key faculty lab and instructional spaces, including Cameron and Burson halls, are also planned.
