Niner Cares: Hurricane Relief Fund
Dear Niner Nation,
I write with a follow-up to yesterday’s message. To aid our sister campuses most affected by Hurricane Helene — UNC Asheville, Appalachian State University and Western Carolina University — we have established the Niners Care: Hurricane Relief Fund. The money raised for this fund will be shared among the universities to support the areas of highest need for students and employees as they begin the arduous process of recovery. If you are able and wish to contribute, you may do so online. Cash will also be accepted between Gates 1 and 2 during the Charlotte vs. ECU home football game this weekend.
Additionally, Head Coach Biff Poggi and Assistant Head Coach Jon Jacobson have pledged to match all donations raised up to a total of $50,000. I thank them for their generosity and support for the faculty, staff and students at our sister institutions.
We also recognize that the effects of Hurricane Helene extend beyond these three campuses, deeply affecting the broader communities in Western North Carolina. If you wish to extend your support further, you may want to consider this list of vetted organizations providing aid in the area:
- American Red Cross – NC
- Asheville Humane Society
- North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund
- United Way, Asheville Buncombe Co.
- United Way, High Country
Unfortunately, as we see all too often in times of crises, scammers mobilize quickly to capitalize on the good intentions of others. Donating to one of these charities helps ensure your money is going to verified organizations.
There is no gift too small to make a difference in these efforts. Together, we can help alleviate the burdens of those facing the daunting task of rebuilding communities and lives. Thank you for your compassion and support as we unite to help Mountaineers, Bulldogs, Catamounts and our fellow North Carolinians.
Today and every day, I am proud to be a Niner.
Sincerely,
Sharon L. Gaber
